Common Causes for a Flat Tire

By SuperFlow Air Team

Flat tires are one of the most common vehicle problems drivers face. Understanding what causes them can help you prevent them and be prepared when they happen.

1. Puncture by Sharp Objects

Nails, screws, glass, and other sharp objects on the road are the most common cause of flat tires. These objects can puncture the tire and cause a slow leak or immediate flat. Always watch for debris on the road, especially in construction zones.

2. Valve Stem Damage

The valve stem is the small protrusion where you add air to your tire. Over time, valve stems can become damaged, corroded, or worn, allowing air to escape. Regular inspection and replacement of valve stems can prevent this issue.

3. Tire Bead Leaks

The tire bead is where the tire meets the rim. If this seal isn't tight, air can slowly escape. This is often caused by corrosion on the wheel rim or damage from hitting potholes or curbs.

4. Under-Inflation

Driving on under-inflated tires generates excess heat, which can damage the tire's internal structure and lead to a blowout. Regular pressure checks are essential.

5. Road Hazards

Potholes, curbs, and speed bumps can damage tires, especially if hit at speed. Avoid road hazards when possible and slow down when you can't.

Be Prepared

No matter how careful you are, flat tires can still happen. A portable air compressor like the SuperFlow MV-50 can be a lifesaver when you need to inflate a tire quickly. Keep one in your vehicle at all times.
