How to Perform a Tire Safety Check

By SuperFlow Air Team

Regular tire safety checks are one of the easiest and most important things you can do for your vehicle's safety. A few minutes of inspection can prevent blowouts, improve fuel economy, and extend tire life.

Step 1: Check Tire Pressure

Use a tire pressure gauge to check all four tires plus the spare. The recommended pressure is listed on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb and in your owner's manual. Check pressure when tires are cold (before driving or at least 3 hours after driving).

Step 2: Inspect Tread Depth

Insert a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, the tread is too worn and the tire needs to be replaced. Most tires also have built-in tread wear indicators.

Step 3: Look for Damage

Inspect each tire for cuts, bulges, cracks, or objects embedded in the tread. Pay special attention to the sidewalls, as damage here can lead to a blowout. If you find any damage, have the tire inspected by a professional.

Step 4: Check for Uneven Wear

Uneven tread wear can indicate alignment or suspension problems. If the inside or outside edges are worn more than the center, or vice versa, have your alignment checked.

Step 5: Don't Forget the Spare

Your spare tire needs attention too. Check its pressure regularly and make sure it's in good condition. A flat spare is useless when you need it most.

Keep a portable air compressor in your vehicle so you can adjust tire pressure whenever needed. The SuperFlow HV-35 is compact enough to store in any trunk.
